Poker Table Position
Copyright © 2007, RealPokerLessons.com
Poker Table position is
extremely important to understand. Playing hands in position is
critical to your success. The basic idea is that you want to play in
late position as much as possible simply so you can see what people
do before its your turn to act. Of course that's not entirely
possible as the button constantly rotates, but understanding what
hands should be played from what position is a key component to
playing poker. For instance, let's say you hold Jd and 8d in early
position. You really want to see the flop, so you limp in. A guy
from middle position raises you 4x and a guy in late position
re-raises him. Now what are you going to do?
A basic rule that I
"try" to stick to is, if I'm in early position, I have to have a
monster hand, i.e. AA, KK, QQ, JJ or AK. If I loosen up more then
that, its because I know the players at the table and I'm familiar
with their play, or I just feel I can out play them after the flop.
In middle position, I will generally come in with hands like Q-10,
J-10, A-Q, etc. Just remember that people in late position always
act after you which give them opportunities to bluff, raise, etc. if
you miss. One key thing to remember is that most pots are
going to get raised; if you constantly try to limp out of position
(early), you will lose more money in the long run.
